Multichoice Uganda has raised subcription fees for its packages on its brands DSTV and GOTV.
Multichoice has announced another price hike for its DSTV and GOtv services, effective October 1st. This is the second increase in six months. Most packages will see an average price increase of 3%. The most popular package, DStv Compact Plus, will rise by Shs5,000 to Shs175,000. The top-tier DStv Premium package will increase by Shs10,000 to Shs300,000. GOtv Supa will also see a price increase from Shs69,000 to Shs71,000.
Customers have expressed concerns about the frequent price hikes and whether the service remains affordable.
Some have gone so far as to threaten to quit and have asked regulators, such as the Uganda Communications Commission, to intervene, while some subscribers are leaving, and the cost of producing its content is rising as competition from other streaming services like Netflix heats up.
When pressed to explain the rampant price increases, Multichoice, the company that owns these pay TV service providers said it was facing stiff competition that is spreading and that it must also adapt to the same space, which comes at a cost.
