Legislators from northern Uganda have submitted their demands to the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities regarding the high charges imposed on vehicles and passengers crossing Murchison Falls National Park, following the closure of Karuma Bridge by the Ministry of Works and Transport.
During a heated debate in Parliament on Wednesday, September 25th, 2024, initiated by Kilak South MP Hon. Olanya Gilbert’s motion on matters of public importance, northern legislators expressed concerns that residents are being unfairly treated while traveling to and from Kampala.
In an interview with Mighty Fire, Hon. Okin PP Ojara, the MP for Chua West, voiced appreciation for the support of the northern community regarding the current charges. He stated that they are awaiting a response from the Ministry of Tourism within 48 hours concerning the removal of these fees.
Ojara emphasized that although Parliament has approved charges for vehicles and travelers using the tourism road, it is crucial to suspend these fees, as the Ministry of Works and Transport has designated this road as an alternative route to Northern Uganda.
He criticized the Ministry of Works and Transport for failing to provide immediate options for travelers accessing Northern Uganda before starting the rehabilitation of Karuma Bridge, which has led to the current difficulties.
At present, the Ministry of Tourism is charging 40,000 UGX for each small vehicle and 25,000 UGX per passenger entering Murchison Falls National Park. Buses are charged 200,000 UGX per trip to Kampala while entering Northern Uganda.
