Lira City, Uganda – President Yoweri Museveni has officially commissioned the construction of the Akii-Bua Stadium in Lira, marking a significant step towards hosting the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027. The ceremony took place early this morning amidst a gathering of government officials, sports enthusiasts, and local residents.
The new stadium, priced at an estimated $129 million, is expected to be completed within the next 20 months, ensuring readiness for the continental football tournament. Named after the legendary Ugandan athlete John Akii-Bua, the stadium will not only serve as a venue for AFCON but also aims to boost sports development in the region.
In addition to the stadium, President Museveni announced that Gulu Airport will undergo significant upgrades. These enhancements are part of the broader infrastructure development plan associated with hosting international events. Furthermore, the Bobi – Aboke road will also see improvements, which are expected to facilitate better access to the stadium and enhance regional connectivity.
The construction of the stadium will be undertaken by SAMCO, an Egyptian engineering company.
