The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB), an agency under Uganda’s Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries (MAAIF), has taken a major leap forward with the launch of a state-of-the-art semen processing laboratory in Entebbe.
This advanced facility significantly enhances the agency’s capacity, enabling it to produce up to 12,000 doses of high-quality animal semen per hour.
The facility is equipped with cutting-edge technologies, including modern semen viability assessment equipment, photometers, freezing apparatus, and specialized packaging machines.
It serves as a pivotal addition to the NAGRC’s Sire Stud, home to elite breeding bulls. Farmers now have the opportunity to inspect these bulls, select the most suitable genetics for their breeding needs, and access high-quality semen tailored to local, regional, and international markets.
“Our new production line is designed to process semen of unmatched quality for various markets,” explained Sire Stud Manager Luwagu.
Farmers across Uganda have already voiced their satisfaction with the agency’s offerings. Joseph Biribonwa from Hoima noted the excellent quality of Friesian and Ayrshire semen provided by NAGRC, which has improved his farm’s productivity. Similarly, Andrew Kawuka from Kiwenda shared his success story, emphasizing the high-caliber artificial insemination services that have yielded healthy Friesian calves and heifers.
NAGRC has been a reliable supplier of liquid nitrogen and high-grade semen to District Local Governments (DLGs), farmers, and agricultural groups. The agency is now setting its sights on global markets.
“The goal is to achieve international accreditation, allowing us to export our locally produced semen to elite markets worldwide,” said Dr Peter Beine, the Executive Director of NAGRC.
“There is a growing demand for Ankole cattle semen, renowned for its agro-tourism appeal, as well as improved tropical breeds. This facility positions us uniquely to meet these demands.”
With this state-of-the-art laboratory, NAGRC aims to strengthen Uganda’s animal breeding industry and carve a niche in the international market by exporting high-value genetics.
The facility’s strategic location in Entebbe underscores its commitment to innovation and excellence, ensuring that Uganda’s farmers and breeders remain competitive in the global agricultural sector.
